N-CON Systems Mercury Deposition Network Sampler (MDN)

The MDN is now accepted for NADP mercury sites.

The MDN Sampler was designed for collection of wet only mercury deposition samples for routine collection of wetfall to provide reliable samples for precipitation chemistry. It provides prompt opening and closing of the sample container and is sensitive to light snow, drizzle or heavy fog.

____ ______

How it Works
The infrared precipitation sensor detects the onset of precipitation and uncovers the wet only collector within twenty seconds. Within two minutes after precipitation stops, cover returns to container which minimizes exposure to dry deposition. Sensor also detects drizzle, heavy fog or light snow, which may carry significant amounts of deposition.

Collection of uncontaminated wet-deposition-only samples is essential to precipitation chemistry validity. Splash from exterior surfaces is minimized by compact design. The compressed seal on the cover prevents leakage of dry deposition in to the container and retards evaporation. Underside of cover is protected from ground splash when the cover is opened. Splash shield covers, but does not touch the seal.

System reliability is essential for collection of valid samples. Cover drive motor is rated for 35 years typical service. All parts are easy to replace without special tools. Battery back up can be provided to assure operation if line power fails.

System is mounted on a 2" NPS pipe by a socket secured with 2 set screws so that it may be easily rotated for proper sensor orientation.
